Update: Math Solutions

Last year, I wrote about math and my grade 11 son and how to make math interesting for him. Soon after, a guy came into the bookstore, who, I discovered after a brief conversation lives and breathes math. Hmm. I think a rare find. Now he comes to our house a couple of times a week to spread the word and my son’s marks have soared.

He’s not the first tutor we’ve had, but he is the only one who has had any effect. I think it is because he is really passionate about his subject and he has the social skills that we don’t normally equate with a numbers person and he can teach.

So, if you or someone you know is struggling in a subject in school, don’t give up, instead find somebody who can help you and who you can work with. The right person can make all the difference in the world.

Wow! I’m Going to the Yukon!

I have been selected to spend three months at The Pierre Berton Writers Retreat in Dawson City. I applied for this retreat quite a while ago, and promptly forgot all about it. Needless to say, I was surprised when the phone call came. Dawson City is 500 kilometers north of White Horse, and a gizillion miles away from Vancouver. This is a huge honour and opportunity for me and I am eternally grateful to Pierre Berton for leaving such a generous legacy for writers around the world. Just yesterday I was complaining about time constraints. I love it when wishes come true.

I’m pretty urbane, and somewhat anxious about living in a place where you have to have your sushi flown in ;), but I always learn alot when I’m out of my comfort zone and I know I will get some awesome writing time in.

It’s been eons since I’ve had so much unstructured time with no responsibilities to anybody but myself, so I plan to take full advantage, and to blog, because there will be no excuse not to…

Status: Too Busy To Blog

It’s been quite a while since I’ve visited this site and I am finding it difficult to find the time to blog, what with work, and my suite101 blogs and editing. I’m now in charge of two sections: Social Issues and Reading and Writing — that’s a lot of writers to manage and we are in hiring mode.

I’m really unhappy about the snow — don’t want to step out the door, unless it is to visit the neighbourhood pub, which is conveniently located within spitting distance. 🙂

It’s warm in there and sometimes I get tired of talking to myself.
