WILLIAM SAROYAN INTERNATIONAL PRIZE FOR WRITING

This award, given by Stanford University Libraries in partnership with the William Saroyan Foundation, recognizes newly published works of fiction and non-fiction with a $5,000 award for the winner in each category. The prize is designed to encourage new or emerging writers and honor the Saroyan literary legacy of originality, vitality, and stylistic innovation.

WRITING CONTEST FOR STUDY ABROAD

The University of New Orleans offers this contest for study abroad in the summer of 2010. Full fee waivers, including housing allowances, will be granted to one writer each in the genres of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Winners may attend any of UNO’s 2010 study-abroad writing programs: Writing Workshops in San Miguel de Allande, Mexico; Writing Workshops in Montpellier; The Ezra Pound Center for Literature, Dorf Tirol, Italy. Open to anyone writing in English who has not yet published a book of 45 pages or more in the genre of application. Prose submissions should not exceed 4,500 words (about 15 pages double spaced). Poetry submissions should not exceed 5 pages and may include a maximum of 3 poems. Submitted work must be unpublished at the time of submission.

OH CANADA POETRY CONTEST
Foundation for Public Poetry/Fondation Poésie Publique. Taken from the Canadian national anthem, rewrite only one line: ” True patriot love in all thy sons command.”
Winner will receive $20 and a copy of Leonard Cohen You’re Our Man. The winning line will be sent to the House of Commons requesting that the National Anthem be amended.
Entrants must submit their 1 line via email to: publicpoetry@gmail.com with the subject line “Oh Canada submission”. Entrants must live in Canada.

MALAHAT REVIEW – NOVELLA CONTEST

Submit a single work of fiction, with a minimum length of 10,000 words, and a maximum length of 20,000 words. No restrictions as to genre, subject matter, or aesthetic approach apply. Fees: $35 CAD for Canadians $40 USD for US entries $45 USD for entries from elsewhere. Enquiries: malahat@uvic.ca. Check the website for full contest details.

ANNUAL OKANAGAN SHORT FICTION CONTEST

This contest invites all southern interior writers east of Hope, west of the Alberta border, north of the US border, and south of William’s Lake to submit their original unpublished works of fiction. Author Laisha Rosnau will select the best three stories to be awarded cash prizes. Entry fee: $15.

CREATIVE NON-FICTION ON THE SUBJECT OF “MIGRATION”

Accepted creative non-fiction forms include personal essay, lyric essay, narrative essay, and memoir. The prize is $250 and publication in LAKE: A Journal of Arts and Environment. Length: 2500 words maximum. Entry fee: $20 (includes a one-year subscription to LAKE). POSTCARD STORY COMPETITION
The Writers’ Union of Canada is hosting its 11th annual competition. A Postcard Story is a short piece of 250 words or less. Grand prize is $500. Open to all writers of all genres.

ROSE & CROWN 2010 NEW NOVELS COMPETITION

Your book must never have been published in any form and you must own all rights to the work. Open to anyone of any age, worldwide. Manuscripts must be a minimum of 40,000 words and a maximum of 150,000, on any subject as long as they are in keeping with the described aims of the Rose & Crown imprint – Christian Inspirational Romance. Cost: £18. First prize £200, second prize £100, plus guaranteed publishing contract offers for both.

FISH ONE-PAGE STORY PRIZE 2010

Flash fiction is a wonderfully entertaining thing to read and a challenging thing to write, but the readers of the Fish Anthology love it; this is another chance to get a story, however small, into the anthology. Maximum length 300 words. Entry fee: €12 (online entry), €15 (postal entry). First Prize: €1000.

FISH POETRY PRIZE 2010

No restrictions on style or theme – but poems must be in English and less than 200 words. Entry fee: €12 (online entry), €15 (postal entry). First prize: €1000.

Winners will have their work published in a limited edition Chapbook and receive 25 copies. Poets: submit up to 15 pages of poetry. Prose: submit fiction or creative non-fiction up to 5000 words. Complete a contest entry form and include the $10 reading fee.

Short Story Contest and Poetry Contest
San Luis Obispo NightWriters

1st Place $75, 2nd Place $50—for both short story and poetry. Finalists receive certificates.
Contest is open to everyone, but eligible NightWriters will be entered into a drawing for a scholarship to the 2010 Central Coast Writers’ Conference
Entries must be based on the theme: TRUST/BETRAYAL.
Entry Fee: $10 for first story or poem, $5 for each additional story or poem

1ST BOOK COMPETITION

Writer’s Studio at SFU’s 1st Book Competition is a national literary contest seeking original, book-length manuscripts in English by emerging Canadian writers who haven’t previously published a book. The winning manuscripts, in each of the three contest categories of fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry, will be published in 2011 by Anvil Press.

JACKPINE SONNET CONTEST

Arc and Geist magazine hope to reinvigorate a Canadian-made form. As always, there are cash prizes, but the poet will be published in Geist, Poetry Is Dead and the Tyee.

    • Hi Amanda and thanks for the compliment!
      I kind of regret that I did not monetize my blog, so my one suggestion is to use blogger if you want to have adsense – in the end this could add up to a little extra cash on a monthly basis.
      Apart from that, I really try to write about issues that will interest readers who are also writers – and I try to write lots – although, lately, I haven’t lived up to that – so busy.
      Use a clean theme, not too busy and it’s all about content! Write what you’d search for. Let me know when your blog is up and we can link.
