  5. Dear Julie:

My publisher, Inner Traditions International, is releasing my next book titled “Teachings of the Santeria Gods” on August 15th. It is a collection of short stories based on Afro-Cuban (Santeria/Lucumi) myths. I “think” you do book reviews for suite101.com, and if you do would love to send you a copy for your review.

Also, I’m going on a “blog-tour” and was hoping you’d be interested in hosting me on my virtual tour.

Please email me privately at BStuartMyers@gmail.com at your earliest convenience.

    Thank you:

  6. Hi, Ms. Burtinshaw,

I have a new Alternate Reality News Service book in print called WHAT WERE ONCE MIRACLES ARE NOW CHILDREN’S TOYS. The book is basically comic science fiction; however, because it grew out of my Web site of political and social satire, LES PAGES AUX FOLLES, there is also a satirical edge to much of the writing in it. It unfolds as a series of faux news articles, although the concept has grown to include two advice columns (Ask Amritsar and Ask the Tech Answer Guy) and even obituaries (Lives Unlived). Then, there are the pieces that are hard to describe…

I would like to send you additional information, including a press release, in the hopes that you might be interested in assigning the book for review on Suite 101.com. Unfortunately, the form does not allow attachments; would you be so kind as to send me your email so that I may send you the press release?

    Thanks,

    Hello!
This may seem like a fragile link, but we met on a trip to Cuba on a day trip to Havana. We had a drink at that little restaurant before heading to the Tropicana. If you remember I will be thriled – if you don’t I won’t be surprised at all…
You mentioned Suite 101 to me then, and I finally decided to apply to be a writer. I am still the city editor at the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and a regular music reviewer, but I thought this would be a good way for me to stretch my writing limbs.
Just wanted to say hello. I hope and your husband are doing well.

    • That’s amazing and I have a vague recollection of this! Definitely visit suite101.com and hit the “freelance writing jobs’ icon in the top right hand corner. Suite is a great place to learn about how to write for the web and we are always on the lookout for reviewers from print media. We have a large music section too!

I hope all is also well with you,
      Julie

    Hello Mrs. Burtinshaw,
I am a high school student (grade 11), currently studying in Canada. I have just finished reading ‘The Perfect cut’. I really wanted to appreciate for your novel that revealed the unknown side of human nature to the world. I was also a ‘cutter’just like the main character and I thought that it was normal to do so. However, the novel made me realize the hazards and outcome of it. I really admired every single word that described his feeling. I have never written to any author but I thought I definitely have to write to you.

    Hi Julie,

For some reason my LiveJournal account won’t let post comments to your laneway blog any more, eventhough it let the first one through under ‘prettypretty’.

Let’s just say livejournal’s handling of inactive user names is a load of a$$ .

One tip from a design point is accessibility, we went with raised electrical and data outlets and extra grab bars in the shower. If you’re going to use it may as well put extra touches in that makes it ‘yours’. But that being said custom = $$$.

Am not a very good blogger but would be more than willing to try and help with questions you may have.

And yes we’re in Van, too. Eastside, Represent! =P

We’ve also spotted a couple of other lwhs going up near where we are in various stages of completion and contrasting construction styles.

It’s truly exciting, isn’t it? Just you wait till ground breaking starts!

    Cheers,
    Allan

    Hi Julie!

I have been following your blog about lane house but you haven’t posted anything since October 1st. Are you still going ahead with it? Were you able to obtain the city permits? Me and my husband are considering a lane house and we would love to hear how your plans are going. Thanks!

    • Hi and thank you getting me going again. I’ve kind of had social media burn out of late…anyway, I’ve posted again (twice tonight), with some information you might find really interesting about an upcoming lanehouse tour!
      Thanks for following!

  44. Harold Rhenisch

Hi, Julie, do you know if the Klaustrid AIR program has a facebook site? I’ll be there for five weeks in March and April, crafting a poetic essay about Gunnarsson’s return to Iceland and his German tour in 1940, on the premise that he gave us a new form of nonfiction, almost a century ahead of its time. “Just link to the facebook site,” says Skuli BjΓΆrn. He is obviously better at Facebook than I! I get the Klaustrid in the south, but that’s it. I found one for Skriduklaustur, but none for the program. I gather you are at UBC now … earning a piece of paper or helping others earn theirs? If you had the time to tear yourself away and send me a facebook note at Harold Rhenisch or email me at I would be grateful. I intend to start my Icelandic blog in February, and to continue it through the residency. Let me know if you’d like me to let you know when it’s up. Best, Harold Rhenisch ,

  45. Hello Julie,

I have been blogging (http://simpleloveofreading.blogspot.ca/) for three years now, and I am extremely sad to say that I have never really paid much attention to our Freedom to Read Week. This year I am hoping to fix that by reaching out to a few of my favorite Canadian authors, and requesting a small guest post talking about banned books and our freedom to read.

I sincerely hope that you will consider joining me on my blog during the week of February 24th to March 2nd 2013, to bring some awareness to book lovers everywhere.

    Thank you for your time,
    Amy πŸ™‚

Hi there, I am looking for some feedback, or assistance….I have been writing for years. I however just found the courage to allow people to read some of my work. I was hoping to find out if there were any contests, or any way to have my work looked at professionally, without a high cost. I am a mom of three and one on the way, so funds are very very limited. I thank you for any info you can send me.

  47. Kathy Gates

Hey from Yukon Territory. I just want to let you know that “Diamond Tooth Gertie” was not “born with the name “GERTIE LOVEJOY”. In actual fact, her name was Mary Isobel Lovejoy. I am researching her name and life and what happened to her after she left Dawson City, so that the Klondike Visitors Association will have an accurate biography for her. I have proof of where and when she was born, siblings etc. and when and where she married the Dawson Lawyer, CWC Tabor and after he died in the hotel fire, she remarried and lived to be 83 years old. I have her marriage records as well as her death vertificate.
So much about her life has been neglected or distorted…I had enjoyed reading your blogs and felt I should provide you with accurate information. I cannot share any more until I have written her story up for both the KVA and possibly for a newspaper article……but if you are interested…I can share later.

    sincerely

    Kathy Gates, Whitehorse Yukon

  48. Hi Kathy,
Thanks for contacting me. I can’t wait to hear what you find out about the ‘real’ Diamond Tooth Gertie. The facts sound like a book in the making already! Please keep me posted.
    Best,
    Julie

    • Kathy Gates

I can email you an article we wrote for both the Klondike Visitors Association as well as for the Klondike Sun Newspaper and the Yukon News. It is about 1200 words long…are you interested? If so, how do I send it?
Kathy Gates/ Re: Diamond Tooth Gertie Lovejoy

  51. Becky Bartell

    Hi Julie,
I am the library director at Farnsworth Public Library in Oconto, Wisconsin. Recently, we had a book of yours, titled “Being Bryan” go to “billed” status on a patron’s account. When we tried to find out if we could replace the book, we could not find that you had written a book by that title. Upon further research, we found that your book “The Perfect Cut” has a main character by the name of Bryan. Has that book had several titles? It’s a mystery to us, since we can’t find “Being Bryan” anywhere….Can you help?
    Thanks so much!
    Becky Bartell

  52. Hi Becky,
Sorry for the delayed reply. I’m in the UK at the moment and don’t have internet at my aunt’s house 😦 The book you are looking for is “The Perfect Cut.” I’m not sure how a ‘working title’ ended up in your patron’s vocal, but there you are!
    Thank you
    Julie

  53. Casey

    Hello,
I am a high school English teacher in Ontario and we have been teaching “The Perfect Cut” as part of our Grade 9 Curriculum for about 5 years now. I need to order more copies for our department, but I am having a hard time finding them (Chapters does not seem to be carrying them anymore according to my online searches). Is there a Canadian company that I can order more copies from? Thanks!

    • Hi Casey,
Thank you so much for your comment regarding The Perfect Cut. The publisher, Raincoast Books no longer publishes so the book is ‘orphaned’ and looking for new publisher. I’m thrilled that you are teaching it in your class and hope it is creating lots of discussion around self harm. I’ve searched and you can buy seconds here for very little cost. Please let me know if this works for you are not.
      Very Best,
      Julie

  54. Sorry, I have no idea where you can source them. Do you know the publisher’s name? Try to contact them directly. SB

  55. Zoe

    Hi Julie

My mother has had an email from yourself and Royallite Publishing, Nairobi, Kenya – regarding inclusion in a project called “Power of the Pen Anthology”. Before she goes ahead and completes the contract – would you confirm that this is a valid project – call me suspicious! I can forward you the details of the email if you like.

  56. Zoe

Thanks for the rapid response Julie – I better print off her contract for her now πŸ˜€ All the best for the project.

  57. Hannah

    Hi Julie!

I just finished reading The Perfect Cut, and it hit so close to home. It was so realistic and I felt deeply for Bryan and Michelle. Their father reminded me a lot of my own and I also have a history of self harm. I was so thrilled I stumbled across this book and was able to snag a copy! I really loved the way you described Bryan’s stay in the psychiatric hospital and the way his mental state was handled throughout the book. I feel like I’m rambling, but in sum, I really adored the book and I wanted to thank you for writing it. I also appreciated the resources and information in the back of the book.

    • Hello Hannah,
Thank you so much for taking the trouble to get in touch with me. It means a lot when readers provide feedback, especially when the topic is so personal. I’m really pleased you were able to relate to Bryan’s story. He’s my favourite character in all of my books so far!

  58. Hi, Julie!

Remember when we spoke on the panel about teen writing at the Symposium for Manitoba Writers? I recently took on the job as President of the Manitoba Writers’ Guild Board. One of my jobs is helping to organize the Manitoba Book Awards. One of our jurors has expressed a conflict of interest and can no longer sit on the jury. I immediately thought of you. Would you be interested/have the time to judge 15 books for young people? There are 7 teen novels, 2 graphic novels and 6 picture books to evaluate. I can send you details on what is required, a list of the books and the criteria, if you would like to help out the Guild in this way. Thanks for your time.

    – Susan Rocan

    • HI Susan,
I’m really interested! You can email me directly if you still have my email address from before? It hasn’t changed. Otherwise, I’ll look for your reply here. Wonderful to hear from you.
      Julie

      • Hi, Julie!
Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately, I don’t seem to have your email address, anymore. Since we were last in contact, I switched email providers. I tried to find my old email contact list but I think my old computer has Alzheimers! I have double-checked the email address I included here and it is correct. It should direct you to the Guild address so I can get your contact info there. Sorry about any inconvenience.
        – Susan

  59. PS. I think I made an error when entering my email address. I will attempt to get it right, this time!

    – Susan

  60. Mark Hardin

    Hello, Julie –
I’m glad to read that you are taking advantage of the COVID disruption by returning to school. I am a middle school teacher-librarian in Portland, Oregon. This is my 36th and final year in what has been a very rewarding career. I’d like to inquire about permission to read your 2000 novel, Dead Reckoning, to my students. This would be offered behind the school district firewall and taken down by June of 2021. I’m not sure how to go about securing permission. Thank you for your time and consideration.

    • Hi Mark,
The rights to that book have reverted to me, and I’d like to offer you permission to read it to your students. I think it’s a really important story and I’m thrilled to share it! I’d love to hear their reactions, if possible. Best of luck with your final year of teaching. It is a challenging one, for sure!
      Julie

  61. Hi Julie. Just a quick note to say hi and to let you know that I knew your brother Ed back in the 70’s. I remember him as a truly next-level human with a razor wit and an alarmingly hilarious sense of humour.

I grew up out in the valley in Langley. My neighbour Glen from across the street, was sent to attend St. George’s Boys School after his father passed away prematurely and it was through him that I met Ed and a few of the other guys from St. George’s. We even visited Ed a couple of times when he lived in the tiny little house with the unusually low doorways out in Maple Ridge.

I wasn’t close to Ed. Only met him a half dozen times or so, but he made an impression on me and the shock and grief of his death have never left me. All these years later I still feel deep sadness about his life being cut short so senselessly.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi. Great work on the books. Keep it up! πŸ™‚

  62. Hi Gary, thanks so much for contacting me. Eddy’s is on my mind this week, as December 3rd was the date he was killed, and it’s so lovely to hear from someone who has such great memories. I love that he did leave behind wonderful connections that are still happening all of these years later. I did not know he lived in a little house with a tiny door in Maple Ridge – a self-absorbed teenager in those days! I would love to know more, if you are able and willing. I’m thinking about writing about him, and everything helps. Thanks for your encouraging words regarding writing. Julie

    Hi Julie,

I was just reading the Salt Spring Arts monthly newsletter and I see you are the Artist in Residence for February. I see your talks and your new writing project. What I can’t see is if you are actually on Salt Spring this month!

I am a teacher at Salt Spring Elementary School, teaching grades 5/6 this year. I read my class ‘The Freedom of Jenny’ in February last year and I have so many students repeating with me from last year. I just thought I would contact you on a longshot that you were on SSI and might be available to meet with a class of budding authors?

Thanks for any consideration on this and NO PRESSURE πŸ™‚

  64. Hello Tanya, What a lovely email to receive. Love that Jenny is being read by your students. I am now on Saltspring at my residency. At this point, I am deep in the trenches of a novel, and I can’t commit to anything, but if that changes I will contact you. Again, thank you, Julie
